What is a PDF to Word Converter?
A PDF to Word converter extracts the text content from a PDF document and packages it into an editable Word (.docx) file you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or any other word processor. This tool uses PDF.js to parse your PDF directly in the browser, then the open-source docx library to generate the Word file — nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
How to Convert PDF to Word
- Click the upload area and select your PDF, or drag and drop it onto the page.
- Wait while the tool extracts text from each page — you can watch the progress bar.
- Review the extracted text in the preview panel to check quality.
- Choose whether to preserve line breaks (best for structured documents) or use flowing paragraphs (better for long reports).
- Click Download .docx to get an editable Word file, or Download .txt for plain text.
Limitations of Browser-Based PDF Conversion
PDF is a fixed-layout format — it stores the position of every character on the page, not the logical structure of text. This means that:
- Scanned PDFs (photos of documents) contain no machine-readable text and cannot be converted. You need an OCR tool first.
- Multi-column layouts may be reconstructed with incorrect reading order.
- Tables typically lose their grid structure and become plain rows of text.
- Mathematical equations represented as vector graphics won't convert cleanly.
For native text-based PDFs (such as exported reports, e-books, or word-processor PDFs), conversion quality is generally excellent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Text extraction (via PDF.js) and Word document generation (via the docx library) both happen entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device, making this tool safe for confidential contracts, medical records, or any sensitive content.
Will the formatting be preserved?
Basic line breaks and paragraph structure are preserved. Complex layouts — multi-column text, tables, decorative fonts, headers/footers — may not fully transfer, as PDF stores visual position rather than semantic structure. The preview lets you assess quality before downloading.
What if my PDF is scanned or image-based?
Scanned PDFs (images of text, such as photographed contracts) contain no machine-readable text and will produce an empty or near-empty document. You would need an OCR tool to convert the scanned images to text before using this converter.
