Introduction to TOGAF 9 Certification

TOGAF is the industry standard enterprise architecture framework. It provides the methods and tools for assisting in the acceptance, production, use, and maintenance of an enterprise architecture.

There are four architecture domains that are commonly accepted as subsets of overall enterprise architecture, which TOGAF is designed to support:

  1. Business Architecture
  2. Data Architecture
  3. Application Architecture
  4. Technology Architecture

(Note: Data and Application architectures combined are referred to as the Information Systems Architecture).

TOGAF Exam Guidelines

The TOGAF 9 Certification has two different exam levels. The first level is the TOGAF 9 Foundation (TOGAF Part 1). The second level is the TOGAF 9 Certified (TOGAF Part 2). You can take the exams individually or combined.

  • TOGAF Part 1 Exam: 40 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 1 hour.
  • TOGAF Part 2 Exam: 8 complex scenario questions with a time limit of 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Combined Exam: 48 questions with a time limit of 2 hours 30 minutes.

TOGAF Part 1 Practice Questions

Test your knowledge with these sample practice questions specifically tailored to the TOGAF Part 1 Foundation syllabus.

Question 1

Which one of the following statements best describes TOGAF?

A. TOGAF is a tool for developing Technology Architectures only. B. TOGAF is a framework and method for architecture development. C. TOGAF is a business model. D. TOGAF is a method for IT Governance.

Answer

B. TOGAF is a framework and method for architecture development. TOGAF provides both a structured framework and a step-by-step method (the ADM) for enterprise architecture development.

    Question 2

In which phase of the ADM are Architecture Contracts prepared?

    A. Phase F B. Phase G C. Phase A D. Preliminary Phase

    Answer

    B. Phase G (Implementation Governance). In the Implementation Governance phase, architectural oversight is provided, Architecture Contracts are prepared and issued, and the team ensures the implementation project conforms to the target architecture.

      Question 3

Which one of the following best describes why you need a framework for enterprise architecture?

      A. A framework can speed up the process. B. A framework ensures more complete coverage. C. A framework provides a set of tools and a common vocabulary. D. All of the above.

      Answer

      D. All of the above. An architecture framework is required to optimize and speed up the process, ensure comprehensive coverage across domains, and provide a common vocabulary that disparate teams can understand.

        Question 4

According to TOGAF, which of the following best describes an enterprise?

        A. Any collection of organizations sharing a common set of goals. B. A government agency. C. A whole corporation. D. A division of a corporation.

        Answer

        A. Any collection of organizations sharing a common set of goals. In TOGAF, an 'enterprise' does not rigidly mean a single corporation; it can refer to a government agency, a division within a company, or a chain of separate companies linked by a common goal.

          Question 5

Which of the following types of architecture is NOT one of the primary domain architectures produced by the TOGAF ADM process?

          A. Business Architecture B. Data Architecture C. Application Architecture D. Pattern Architecture

          Answer

          D. Pattern Architecture. Pattern Architecture is not one of the four core domains. The basic domains are Business, Data, Application, and Technology (often abbreviated as BDAT).

            Question 6

Which part of the official TOGAF document provides a structured set of architecture development phases, together with narratives for each phase?

            A. Part I: Introduction B. Part II: Architecture Development Method (ADM) C. Part III: ADM Guidelines and Techniques D. Part IV: Architecture Content Framework

            Answer

            B. Part II: Architecture Development Method (ADM). Part II is the core of the TOGAF standard, outlining the step-by-step ADM cycle.

              Question 7

Which of the TOGAF architecture development phases includes the development of Data and Application Architectures?

              A. Phase A B. Phase B C. Phase C D. Phase D

              Answer

              C. Phase C (Information Systems Architectures). Phase C is specifically dedicated to developing both the Data and Application Architectures that support the Business Architecture.

                Question 8

Which term does the Architecture Content Framework use to describe a work product that is contractually defined, formally reviewed, and signed off by the stakeholders?

                A. Artifact B. Building Block C. Catalog D. Deliverable

                Answer

                D. Deliverable. A deliverable is a tangible work product that is contractually specified, formally reviewed, agreed upon, and signed off by the relevant stakeholders at various stages of the ADM.

                  Question 9

Complete the sentence: The Enterprise Continuum is...

                  A. An Artifact. B. An architecture framework. C. A technical reference model. D. A method for classifying architecture and solution artifacts.

                  Answer

                  D. A method for classifying architecture and solution artifacts. The Enterprise Continuum acts as a virtual repository and classification scheme for all architecture assets, moving from highly generic to highly customized.

                    Question 10

In which ADM phase does the initial implementation planning primarily occur?

                    A. Phase G: Implementation Governance B. Phase C: Information Systems Architectures C. Phase D: Technology Architecture D. Phase E: Opportunities and Solutions

                    Answer

                    D. Phase E: Opportunities and Solutions. This phase focuses on identifying delivery vehicles (projects/programs) and performing the initial implementation planning, including deciding if Transition Architectures are required.

                      Question 11

Which of the following is a key reason why the FIRST execution of an ADM cycle is often more difficult than later cycles?

                      A. Management is not familiar with the ADM process. B. Because there are few architecture assets available for re-use. C. Because of a lack of governance. D. Because of insufficiently trained architecture practitioners.

                      Answer

                      B. Because there are few architecture assets available. The first execution is inherently difficult because the organization has not yet populated its Enterprise Continuum with custom, re-usable assets (building blocks, patterns, etc.).

                        Question 12

As architecture deliverables and work products are modified by subsequent phases in the ADM, how does TOGAF suggest tracking these changes?

                        A. Change control committee B. Document checkpoints and journaling C. Publish and subscribe system D. Version numbers

                        Answer

                        D. Version numbers. Outputs from early ADM phases are frequently iteratively updated in later phases. TOGAF recommends managing these successive updates through rigorous version numbering.

                          Question 13

The architectures that address detailed enterprise needs and business requirements within the Architecture Continuum are known as:

                          A. Strategic Architectures B. Foundation Architectures C. Industry Architectures D. Common Systems Architectures

                          Answer

                          D. Common Systems Architectures. In the continuum, Common Systems Architectures begin to address specific, recognizable business requirements, acting as a bridge between broad industry architectures and highly specific organization architectures.

                            Question 14

Which one of the following represents the detailed construction (or realization) of the architectures defined in the Architecture Continuum?

                            A. Architecture Building Blocks (ABBs) B. Conceptual Models C. Foundation Architectures D. Solution Building Blocks (SBBs)

                            Answer

                            D. Solution Building Blocks (SBBs). While ABBs describe what needs to be built (the architecture), SBBs describe the actual, physical implementations of that architecture (what is actually bought or built).

                              Question 15

Which of the following terms does the TOGAF standard use to describe people who have a key role in, or concerns about, the system?

                              A. Architects B. Consumers C. Stakeholders D. Customers

                              Answer

                              C. Stakeholders. Stakeholders are any individuals or groups with key roles in or concerns regarding the system, including users, developers, sponsors, and managers.

                                Conclusion

The TOGAF 9 certification exam is challenging because it covers an extensive framework with a highly specific vocabulary. It is highly recommended that candidates thoroughly study the official TOGAF 9 documentation and continuously practice with sample questions like the ones provided above.
