What is TOGAF?

TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) is the world's most widely adopted enterprise architecture framework. It provides a structured method — the Architecture Development Method (ADM) — for designing, planning, implementing, and governing enterprise information architecture. Over 80,000 certified practitioners use it across industries including financial services, healthcare, government, and technology.

Certification Prep

Everything you need to pass TOGAF Foundation (Level 1) and Certified (Level 2) — study guides, mock exams, and scenario strategies.

Why Study TOGAF?

Enterprise architecture has moved from a back-office discipline to a boardroom priority. As organisations scale their digital transformation efforts, they need a common language, a repeatable method, and a governance model to align IT strategy with business goals. TOGAF provides all three. It is vendor-neutral, methodology-agnostic, and flexible enough to adapt to organisations of any size — from startups scaling their infrastructure to multinational corporations managing hundreds of applications.

The TOGAF ADM is the centrepiece of the framework. Its ten phases — from the Preliminary Phase through Requirements Management — give architects a structured process for defining the current state of an enterprise, designing a target state, and managing the transition between them. Each phase produces defined outputs: architecture views, gap analyses, roadmaps, and migration plans that business stakeholders can act on.

TOGAF Certification: Foundation vs Certified

The Open Group offers two certification levels. TOGAF Foundation (Level 1) validates that you understand the core concepts, terminology, and structure of the framework — tested with 40 multiple-choice questions. TOGAF Certified (Level 2) tests your ability to apply the framework to realistic enterprise architecture scenarios — assessed through eight complex scenario questions that require structured analysis rather than recall.

Most practitioners target both levels together in a combined exam sitting. The Foundation Study Guide on this site covers everything you need for Level 1, while the Certified Scenario Strategy guide explains how to approach the Level 2 scenario questions methodically.

How to Use This Hub

Each guide on this hub is self-contained — you can read them in any order depending on your goal. If you are new to enterprise architecture, start with What is TOGAF 9.2 and the Four Architecture Domains. If you are studying for the exam, the Foundation Study Guide maps the syllabus and the mock exam lets you test yourself under timed conditions. If you are implementing TOGAF in an organisation, the Pitfalls & Best Practices and Real-World Case Studies guides provide practical, field-tested advice.

TOGAF and Modern Architecture Practices

A common concern is whether TOGAF is compatible with agile delivery and cloud-native infrastructure. The answer is yes — with adaptation. The TOGAF and Agile guide explains how to apply the ADM iteratively rather than as a sequential waterfall. TOGAF 10 specifically added guidance on agile and lean architecture approaches, which the TOGAF 10 vs 9.2 comparison covers in detail. Tools like ArchiMate complement TOGAF with a standardised visual notation, and platforms like Sparx EA, Ardoq, and LeanIX integrate directly with the TOGAF content metamodel — all compared in the TOGAF Tools Comparison guide.
