What is the Zachman Framework?
The Zachman Framework is a two-dimensional classification schema — an ontology — for organising enterprise architectural artefacts. Created by John Zachman in 1987 and published in the IBM Systems Journal, it structures enterprise knowledge across six interrogatives (What, How, Where, Who, When, Why) and six perspectives (Planner, Owner, Designer, Builder, Sub-Contractor, and Enterprise). The result is a 6×6 matrix of 36 cells, each representing a unique intersection of audience and concern. Unlike methodologies such as TOGAF, the Zachman Framework prescribes what to describe, not how to build it — making it a universal reference model for enterprise architects across all industries.

Why Study the Zachman Framework?
The Zachman Framework is widely regarded as the foundational ontology of enterprise architecture. Unlike process-driven frameworks such as TOGAF, it does not tell you how to build an architecture — it tells you what a complete architecture consists of. This makes it uniquely valuable as a communication and classification tool across all stakeholder levels, from the executive boardroom to the developer writing code.
Every cell in the 6×6 matrix represents a unique stakeholder concern described in a specific primitive model. The Planner describes scope; the Owner describes the business; the Designer describes the system; the Builder describes the technology; the Sub-Contractor describes the components; and the Enterprise is the working result. No cell is more important than another — all 36 are necessary for a complete enterprise description. This completeness principle is what makes the Zachman Framework timeless and applicable across industries, organisation sizes, and technology generations.
ZCEA Certification: What Is It and Who Should Pursue It?
The Zachman Certified Enterprise Architect (ZCEA) credential is awarded by the Zachman International certification programme. It validates that a practitioner understands the Zachman Framework ontology at a professional level and can apply it to real enterprise architecture challenges. The certification is respected in enterprise architecture communities alongside credentials like TOGAF, FEAC, and SABSA, and is particularly valued in organisations that use Zachman as their primary architectural reference model.
Candidates are assessed on their understanding of the 36-cell matrix, the six interrogatives, the six perspectives, and their ability to map real-world architectural artefacts to specific cells. Our ZCEA Certification Guide covers the full eligibility requirements, exam format, and study strategy. The mock exam lets you test yourself before sitting the real assessment.
How to Use This Hub
Each guide on this hub is self-contained and can be read in any order depending on your goal. If you are completely new to enterprise architecture, start with What is the Zachman Framework and the Six Interrogatives overview. If you are an experienced architect exploring how Zachman fits into your existing practice, go directly to Combining Zachman and TOGAF or the Digital Transformation guide. If you are preparing for the ZCEA exam, work through the Study Guide and then test yourself with the Practice Questions and Mock Exam.
Zachman and Modern Enterprise Architecture
Some practitioners question whether a framework from 1987 is still relevant in an era of cloud computing, microservices, AI, and agile delivery. The answer is yes — because the Zachman Framework is not a technology or a methodology. It is an ontology: a classification of the questions every enterprise must answer, regardless of the technology used to answer them. The What, How, Where, Who, When, and Why interrogatives apply equally to a cloud-native SaaS platform as they do to a mainframe. The six perspectives apply equally to a 10-person startup as they do to a global bank.
Our Zachman in 2026 guide explores how organisations are applying the framework alongside cloud architecture patterns, AI governance, and DevSecOps. The Agile and DevOps guide shows how iterative delivery teams use the matrix to maintain architectural coherence without reverting to waterfall governance.
